Master of Computer Science

Thesis and Graduation

Three routes to complete the programme, how to register a track and a topic, supervisors, research areas, defence and graduation requirements.

Three routes

Three ways to complete the programme

Students register for a study track after enrolment, following the Student Handbook calendar. All three tracks share the same learning outcomes.

Track 1: Research 29 cr.

A research project (14 cr.) and a thesis (15 cr.) under a lecturer's supervision. Defence requirement: be the main author of at least one paper published or accepted in a journal or proceedings on the State Council for Professorship list (affiliation: University of Science, VNU-HCM), or author of a research result with an accepted intellectual-property application. A supervisor's acceptance letter and the programme unit's approval are required at registration.

Track 2: Applied study with a thesis 13 cr.

More electives (28 cr.) and a 13-credit thesis on an applied problem. A publication during the programme earns bonus marks at the defence.

Track 3: Internship and project 6 + 7 cr.

A 6-credit internship in a company, research institute or applied unit, followed by a 7-credit graduation project linked to the internship. Suited to working students who want to solve a problem at their own organisation.

Registration

Registering a track and a topic

  1. 1Register a track

About three months after enrolment (per the cohort calendar in the Student Handbook). Track 1 needs an application, a supervisor's acceptance letter and the Faculty's approval; tracks 2 and 3 follow the student's choice and programme rules.

  2. 2Choose a direction and a supervisor

Explore lecturers' research directions on the Lecturers page and in the research groups; discuss directly to agree on a topic.

  3. 3Register the topic

Track 1: in year one (about months 4–6), with a longer research period. Tracks 2 and 3: at the end of year one (about months 10–12), carried out in year two.

  4. 4Carry out and report progress

Work regularly with the supervisor; track 1 completes the publication before submitting the defence file.

  5. 5Submit and defend

Under the defence procedure of the Office of Graduate Studies; defence at the end of year two; graduation review afterwards.

Tip: identify your topic direction from the first semester through the core courses and the Faculty's seminars; choose track 1 if you plan a doctorate.

The thesis may be written in English under University rules (requested when the topic is submitted).

Supervisors

Thesis and project supervision

Each thesis or project has at most two supervisors, at least one of whom is a permanent lecturer or researcher of the University of Science or another member of VNU-HCM.

The list of lecturers involved in graduate training, their degrees and research directions is maintained by the Faculty on its website.

Defence

Defence procedure

Files, requirements, schedule, committee composition and thesis templates are set and updated by the Office of Graduate Studies.

Theses and projects are graded by a committee under University procedure; the pass mark is 5.5/10.
