An alumni of the Faculty of Information Technology wins Excellent Thesis Award in the Asia region 2020

09-23-2020

Congratulations to former student Hoang Trung Hieu (Honor Bachelor's degree class of 2015) with the thesis "Enhancing Endoscopic Image Classification with Symptom Localization and Data Augmentation", supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Minh Triet, who was honored to win the Regional Winner prize in the Computer Science field at The Global Undergraduate Awards in Asia region.

The Global Undergraduate Awards is one of the international awards organized to recognize outstanding scientific research results of undergraduate students in various fields. In 2020, the award received a total of 4,148 entries in 25 different fields from 380 universities and academies in 50 different countries. Judges, who are experts in each field, will select 10% of the entries in each field to award as Highly Commended, and the most outstanding entries will have the chance to be nominated as Regional Winners and Global Winners.

Hieu's research project is on developing methods to enhance data and apply deep learning network structures in classifying endoscopic images of the colon. The system helps to screen, detect common diseases, anatomical points and support physicians in image diagnosis. This year, there were 11 entries selected worldwide in this field, with four of them chosen as Regional Winners from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Europe, and Ireland, and one entry chosen as the Global Winner.

The system helps to automatically provide information to support physicians in the diagnosis process, reducing time and effort, and providing many benefits to patients. The results were published in the session: Grand Challenge - ACM Multimedia 2019 - the leading conference on multimedia held in Nice, France. With excellent poster presentation results at the conference, the paper was chosen as one of the two (from a group of five papers) to advance to the Finalist Oral Presentation round. This was the only group from Vietnam participating in the conference in 2019.

This achievement is the result of a process of perfection, synthesis, and improvement of methods from initial results over 2 years, starting from MediaEval 2018. The honored graduate student will continue to delve deeper and solve further problems in this field, such as improving accuracy, creating automatic reports/medical records/endoscopy results, automatic analysis and evaluation of doctor's operations during endoscopy, and testing applications with real data in Vietnam.

In addition to this award, Trung Hieu is also a familiar face with an impressive collection of academic achievements and research, including the Outstanding Young Citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2019, the Information Technology and Communication Award of Ho Chi Minh City in 2018, first prize in the Eureka 2019 Scientific Research Competition for Information Technology, third prize in the international competition - The semi-supervised DAVIS Challenge 2019 - The DAVIS Workshop and Challenge on Video Object Segmentation at the international conference CVPR 2019, the "Five Good Students" of the city, and the Outstanding Young Citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2019, etc.
