Surprising things about the girl passionate about artificial intelligence research

07-09-2020

As one of the 20 outstanding female students in the field of science and technology awarded by the Central Youth Union recently, Diep Gia Han has many achievements in learning and research, especially in artificial intelligence.

Has a B-level computer certificate since... 4th grade

Diep Gia Han (22 years old), currently a fourth-year student in information technology at the University of Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City, was presented with the "Outstanding Female Student in the Field of Science and Technology" prize by the Central Youth Union on the morning of July 6, with many achievements in artificial intelligence research.

Since elementary school, Gia Han has shown a liking for exploring the "many mysteries" of computers. Han recalled, "I remember being very curious at that time, always wondering what was inside the computer, how it worked to type, play games, read news from around the world, store many photos, documents... I started 'playing around' with computer graphics and found it really interesting. In grade 4, I took the B-level computer certificate exam on my own."

Gia Han is particularly good at math and English. In grades 7, 8, and 9, Han won prizes in the city-level Olympiad for English via the Internet (IOE) and the online Math Olympiad. In grade 9, Han also won second prize in the city-level math Olympiad.

This was the advantage that helped Gia Han pass the entrance exam to the specialized computer class at the High School for the Gifted (National University, Ho Chi Minh City) with a score in the top 6 of the class and the highest score in the specialized course (math). In the 3 years studying here, this computer-loving girl began to delve into learning about electronic circuits, operating systems, web, and many other fields and found it increasingly interesting. Gia Han's academic achievement always reaches above 8.5, with 9.0 in grade 12 and specialized computer course scores ranging from 9.5 to 10. Until becoming a student in information technology at the University of Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City, Gia Han began to like artificial intelligence (AI) and research this new field.

Many articles and international awards

Initially, Gia Han became interested in artificial intelligence due to her curiosity. Later, she found herself passionate about it, especially in the field of image processing.

In this field, Gia Han participated and achieved first place in the "Eyes and Ears" category at the 2019 MediaEval international competition held at EURECOM in France. At the competition, Gia Han participated in a group with three friends, and she was the main author. In the Shape Retrieval 2019 - EUROGRAPHICS international competition held in Italy, Gia Han's group participated in the "Monocular Image-Based 3D Object Retrieval" category and ranked first among the top 10. In addition, her group also achieved fourth place in the 2020 international competition (The Unsupervised DAVIS Challenge) held online with many participating groups from universities and research institutes around the world, such as the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Beijing Institute of Technology, and the Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology…

In a traffic camera image processing competition serving smart cities, Han participated in a research group that used artificial intelligence to "solve" the problem of identifying traffic vehicles and detecting abnormal events in traffic surveillance videos. The system tracks traffic vehicles based on their shape and identification features and automatically detects abnormal events on the streets. Han was a co-author of this project, and the paper was published in the "Session: AI City Challenge" at the CVPR conference, a top influential conference in the world of computer vision that was held online due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As of now, Gia Han has published 4 international articles on artificial intelligence, including 1 as the main author and 1 as a co-author. Currently, she also has one international article awaiting results.

As one of the rare 7 female students in her class, Gia Han stated that she did not encounter any difficulties while studying and researching artificial intelligence. With the support of her parents and encouragement from her teachers, Han became more confident and favorable. Gia Han's academic achievements in her department are also impressive, with her current GPA being 8.98/10 (3.88 on a 4.0 scale), placing her among the top 5 students with the highest academic achievements in the advanced program of her course. In her second year, Gia Han was among the top 3 students with the highest achievements in the advanced program of her course. Thanks to these achievements, Gia Han has received many scholarships and awards.

Not only is she a good student, but since high school, Han has participated in many activities and playgrounds to hone her skills. This AI enthusiast once founded a roller-skating playground for young people in her neighborhood and participated in many academic competitions held at universities. "I always think that being a good student is not enough. I like to engage with the world and experience as many things as possible to feel the many colors of life. For today's young generation, I think that English and life skills are extremely important. Foreign languages are an essential factor if you want to study, research, and access the treasure trove of advanced knowledge in the world and life skills to be more successful and live a better life," Gia Han shared.
