Promising Young Talent Award Winner passionate about artificial intelligence

12-23-2019

Hoang Trung Hieu (22 years old) is the youngest winner of the Golden Ball Award organized by the Central Youth Union this year, with the title of Promising Young Talent.

Hieu has just graduated and has been retained to work at the VNUHCM - University of Science. He is the only one in the field of Information Technology to win the Promising Young Talent award, with a series of outstanding achievements despite his young age.

Published scientific papers internationally while still a student.

While still a student, Hieu had published 7 scientific papers at international conferences, 4 of which he was the primary or co-author. Hieu is also a co-author of a specialized book on Information Technology published by the National University of Ho Chi Minh Press. This young man has also won 2 first prizes and 1 second prize in international competitions in the field of information technology. He was commended by the Ministry of Education and Training for winning the second prize in the national computer science competition for high school students in 2014 and was commended by the Central Youth Union for winning the third prize in the nation science and technology competition for high school students in 2015. Hieu also won the second prize in Vietnam Makerthon Contest with INTEL-GALILEO in 2016, the first prize in the Makerthon Programming Contest in 2018, and the Information Technology and Communication Award in Ho Chi Minh City in 2018.

Hieu received a certificate of merit

Hieu said, “Since my primary school years, I have had a passion for electrical and electronic devices. I would disassemble old toys and create models to participate in the Youth Creativity Contest in Khanh Hoa province. In ninth grade, I was introduced to informatics and became a member of the Nha Trang team to participate in the provincial student competition. When studying Informatics specialized at Le Quy Don High School (Nha Trang), I joined the provincial team to compete in the national student competition. What’s special is that I had the opportunity to participate in the National High School Science and Technology Innovation Contest for two consecutive years, and I achieved second place in the field of computer science. With this achievement, I was selected to become a direct-entry student of the Bachelor of Honor Program, Class of 2015 - Information Technology Department, University of Science, VNUHCM”.

During his time as a student, Hieu achieved excellent academic results and received many valuable scholarship such as the “Odon Vallet” scholarship (in the academic year 2015, 2016 and 2019), the “Career Preparation” scholarship (in the academic year 2017-2018 and 2018-2019), and the “MUFG Bank Scholarship” (from Japan, in 2018). Hieu graduated with honors from the Honor Program in 2015 with a grade point average of 9.25.

Delving into the application of artificial intelligence

Hieu explains that his passion for the field of information technology comes from his natural curiosity, love of invention and logical thinking. He finds it fascinating to be able to apply the knowledge he has learned to create many computer applications that solve problems and challenges in life. “The potential for the application of information technology in modern life is vast and extends to all fields of life. For me, information technology is a tool that I can use to contribute my efforts to creating useful products for the community and society” Hieu believes.

The field that Hieu is passionate about researching is building applications of artificial intelligence and computer vision to solve problems in the healthcare sector. Some practical topics/ applications that Hieu has participated in with his research group at the University of Science, where Hieu is main contributor, received high praise, such as proposing a new method for classifying endoscopic images of the gut, a system to screen and detect common diseases, anatomical points in endoscopic images and support suggestions for high-risk images for doctors in image diagnosis. This system helps doctors work more efficiently, increasing the number of patients treated. The results of this work were published at the top multimedia conference in 2019.

This is the research product that Hieu is most satisfied with because it is very close to the main research direction that Hieu wants to pursue. This is also part of his thesis. This topic also participated and won the first prize in the Eureka 2019 scientific research competition for students in the field of information technology.

Hieu during his trip to the International Conference

With the results from this study, among 26 participating teams from all over the world, the scientific paper authored by Trung Hieu has been selected as one of five publications in the Grand Challenges - BioMedia Track of ACM Multimedia 2019, a leading conference in the field of multimedia communication. Hieu also received sponsorship to attend the conference in Nice, France and achieved excellent poster presentation results at the conference. The paper continues to be selected as one of two (out of five papers) to advance to the Finalist Oral Presentation round.

Another work by Hieu is a proposal for a new method in processing traffic camera images to serve smart cities, specifically in the problem of re-identifying traffic vehicles and detecting abnormal events in traffic surveillance videos. The system helps to track traffic vehicles based on their shape and identification characteristics, while also automatically detecting any abnormal incidents occurring on the streets. The results were published at the CVPR 2019 conference, which has a top global influence in computer vision.

“Follow your passion, success will follow you”

Hieu shared: “I really like the perspective from the movie 3 Idiots, about the meaning of passion and success, which is: Follow your passion, success will follow you. For young people, passion is the most important motivation to guide them on the path of self-discovery and self-development. Success is the sweet fruit that nourishes passion, and encourages it to continue to grow, providing more strength and confidence for young people on the path they have chosen”.

Continuing on the topic of how young people can pursue a passion for scientific research, Hieu believes that it will be very difficult to someone to succeed alone in the early stages without the support of a research team: “Therefore, you need to find a good research group for yourself, where there are mentors, senior colleagues, and fellow companions who always create the most favorable conditions and always accompany you in conducting your research as soon as possible. Always maintain stable academic performance in foundational courses, specialized courses, improve foreign language skills, and take international language certificates. Always be bold, enthusiastic in communicating with friends and colleagues, presenting your own thoughts, new ideas, listening and learning from many different sources,” Hieu said.
