Topic Summary:

Business rules are essential for enforcing regulations within an organization and play a crucial role in managerial decision-making. In contrast, a different type of rule has emerged in context-aware service systems: context rules. Context rules are utilized to infer context for suggesting and operating services appropriately. In this sense, context rules ensure the intelligence of services within intelligent service systems. Over the past decades, researchers and practitioners have discussed rule modeling and management within information systems and business services. However, regarding context-aware services in intelligent service systems, there remains a lack of exploration into rule aspects, particularly in understanding how business rules and context rules interact within such a system. This paper aims to propose a rule modeling framework (called the RuCBS framework) to represent rules in context-aware response services of intelligent service systems through the three aspects of service science (Management, Science, and Engineering). The framework presents concepts, a meta-model connecting these concepts, and rule pattern models. The framework is validated through a case study involving a banking service. Future research directions regarding rules in context-aware response services within intelligent service systems are also discussed.
